Hurst Phasing
Overview
Hurst Phasing is more of a process than a tool. While we add it to a chart like any other indicator, there is an enormous amount of work and understanding which is needed to used when phasing a market. Our plan is to provide a video course on this but we have no ETA at this stage.
JM Hurst - a NASA data scientist in the 60’s and 70’s - outlines phasing in his books. It is used to identify major cycle bottoms. Hurst applies the principle of harmonicity to say that there should be cycles at related higher and lower harmonics. Once the first (dominant) cycle is phased correctly, adding these harmonic cycles becomes easy.
A confluence of cycles make it extremely likely that a major low will be seen in the market.
To add the tool to your chart, select the tool from the Hurst tool group, and left-click on the chart to add the tool. Optuma will then draw the tool in a window below the chart using the default settings.
Actions & Properties
Actions
Add New Row: Allows you to add an additional row using a subset of the initial cycle. The options included are 1/3, 1/2, 1/5, x2, x3 and x5.
Hide Diamond: Allows you to hide the selected Diamond from the Hurst Phasing tool (turning it into an X). Clicking the Action again will restore the diamonds default view.
Add to Toolbar: Adds the selected tool to your custom toolbar.
Apply Settings to All: When multiple Hurst Phasing tools have been applied to a chart, page or workbook, this action can be used to apply the settings of the one selected to other instances of the tool. This is a great time saver if an adjustment is made to the tool - such as line colour - as this allows all the other Hurst Phasing tools in the chart, page or entire workbook to be updated instantly.
Copy Tool: Allows you to copy the selected tool, which can then be pasted onto a different chart window.
Move to Back: If the tool is displaying in front of other tools or indicators clicking this action will move the tool view to the background.
Move to Front: If the tool is displaying behind other tools or indicators on the chart, clicking this action will bring the tool to the forefront.
Set Time Alert: Selecting this action will set a Time Alert at the value the Vertical Line is positioned.
Restore Default Settings: Click this action if you have adjusted the default settings of the tool, and wish to return to the standard properties originally installed with Optuma.
Save Settings as Default: If you have adjusted any of the tool’s properties (colour, for example) you can save the adjustments as your new default setting. Each time you apply a new Hurst Phasing to a chart, the tool will display using the new settings.
Delete: Deletes the tool from the chart.
Properties
Tool Name: Allows you to adjust the name of the tool, as it’s displayed in the Structure Panel.
Cycles: Here you can edit, add or remove levels to the Hurst Phasing tool. Levels can have their colour adjusted from this same window.
Max Cycles: Sets the maximum number of bars the default cycle can cover between diamonds (the minimum is 10). The default cycle length is set by the top coefficient of the Periodgram cycle tool (using the same number of bars, non-log).
Calc Style: Allows you to set the cycle count between using Trading Days (Bars) and Calendar Days.
Tool Transparency: Use this slider bar to adjust the transparency of the tool. Moving the slider to the left will increase the transparency of the tool.
Visible: Un-tick this checkbox to hide the tool from the chart.
Show in Price Scale: Allows you to display the cycle counts for each row in the tools price scale, highlighted in the same colour as the row(s). The label will show a d for Calendar Days and and a b for Bars.
